The mediator should help the parties understand alternatives, potential outcomes and likely ramifications of their decisions so that they can make informed and rational decisions. In order to help the parties (and be trusted by both parties) the mediator needs to be unbiased and balanced. This does not mean that the mediator agrees with every action or statement a party makes. What it does mean is that the mediator maintains a focus on the big picture of helping the parties through their Issues and makes sure that he treats each party fairly and appropriately. In order for the parties to relax and be comfortable discussing private and sometimes sensitive information, it is necessary to have complete confidence that the mediator respects your privacy and keeps any information received confidential.
