During 18-year career as a federal judge, presided over numerous jury and non-jury trials, discovery conferences and motion hearings of all types. Conducted hundreds of settlement conferences involving a broad range of subject matters including patent, trademark, and copyright cases; entertainment cases including film and television distribution agreement profit participation disputes; business and commercial disputes; insurance; employment; wage and hour; class actions; civil rights, personal injury and wrongful death matters. Also presided over debt collection actions and criminal proceedings. Elected by colleagues to serve as the Chief Magistrate Judge for the 25 Magistrate Judges of the Central District of California. In this role, served on all court governance committees and as a liaison between the Magistrate Judges and District Judges of the Central District. Also served on several Ninth Circuit committees, including the Magistrate Judge Executive Board and the Magistrate Judges Education Committee. Supervised all appeals for the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Los Angeles, and conducted appellate law trainings at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles and at the United States Department of Justice National Advocacy Center. Directly handled certain complex appellate matters. As Assistant United States Attorney, represented federal agencies and officials in civil litigation involving tort claims, civil rights, employment, class actions, contracts and regulatory disputes, and enforcement actions. Served as lead counsel in numerous trials and represented federal agencies in more than 30 appeals before the Ninth Circuit.

Extensive experience in mediation involving commercial and business disputes, including contract, trade secret, and employment related issues; intellectual property disputes, healthcare disputes and mass arbitrations.

Has mediated hundreds of business disputes involve alleged breaches of contract or breaches of fiduciary duties; trade secret and related disputes; intellectual property disputes involving copyrights, trademarks and patents; and mass arbitrations. Has also mediated employment disputes, including wrongful termination, discrimination, as well as wage and hour disputes.

Judge Segal's mediation style emphasizes the preparation aspect of mediation and includes extensive pre-mediation review of materials. Pre-mediation calls and strategizing is critical. Judge Segal recognizes that each dispute is unique and finds that understanding the circumstances of each dispute well in advance of the mediation is a factor in mediation success. During the mediation, Judge Segal will meet in separate caucuses with the parties and facilitate communications regarding resolution. She will assist with the evaluation of claims and defenses if the mediation benefits from that evaluation.
