Law practice focused on peaceful resolution of family disputes. Extensive experience with divorce and custody - from high conflict disputes to gentle uncoupling. Divorce cases have included issues such as complex support structures, division of assets in the context of high-net-worth estates, closely held businesses, and/or intellectual property. Family disputes often involve sensitive situations involving feelings of shame or the need for privacy. Alternative dispute resolution provides an array of resolution options. Training and proficiency in interest-based negotiation, mediation, collaborative law process, and conciliation provide this mediator with a sensitivity to such client concerns. Other family law cases have involved, for example, disputes over co-parenting issues, inheritance, post adoption contact agreements, and prenuptial/post-nuptial agreements. In these cases, the combination of experience and discretion in those facilitating settlement led to peaceful outcomes.

Mediator and mediation “Coach.” The Coach role involves supporting a client through the process of mediation (with a different mediator) and helping the client prepare for mediation – and/or accompanying the client to mediation. Both roles are designed to give the client a safe space to discuss issues and access to the data needed to make informed decisions. Mediation continues to expand as does the wealth of information available to mediators. Continued education expands the mediator’s toolbox. This mediator served on the faculty of the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education Family Law Mediation Training program (2018-2022) and continues to study enhanced techniques, most recently through a master class at Mosten Guthrie Academy (2024) and programs through the Academy of Professional Mediators (2025).

Mediation practice focusing on family law, most often relating to disputes over custody/co-parenting, asset division, inheritance, and support. Other mediation cases have encompassed prenuptial or post-nuptial agreement negotiations, inheritance issues, and disputes unique to alternative family structures - for example, situations where more than two people are involved in the care and custody arrangements for children. One case was especially poignant. Divorce mediation clients were grieving the loss of child. One parent decided to end the marriage when the shared grief became too great to bear. The parties resolved the division of their assets quite easily but reached an impasse as to some relatively inexpensive items. When the conversation became difficult, one of the clients shared (in private) that the other was having a difficult time discussing items that were purchased in anticipation of the child’s birth. Once this was understood, the discussion turned to donating the items to a children’s charity and the case settled. When the mediator creates a safe space for clients to explore an issue, a previously evasive resolution can enter the room.

If the matter is currently filed in court, a copy of pleadings relevant to the dispute will be requested in advance of the mediation session. Otherwise, pre-mediation briefs are appreciated if counsel is participating in mediation, and completely optional if parties are not represented. Parties are encouraged to approach mediation with curiosity and creativity, so it is essential that they feel secure and comfortable, whether meeting with their mediator jointly or separately. Parties are encouraged to share information, ask questions, and brainstorm freely because informed decision-making leads to more sustainable choices.

Mediation is generally conducted via video conference programs such as Zoom or Go To Meeting. Based on the preference of the parties, breakout rooms, screen sharing, and whiteboards are utilized.
